The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music [Jan. 31]

Kenny Chesney

Each week I take a look the Billboard Country Airplay chart and grade the top 30 songs. The grading format I use each week is every song will receive either a +1, -1 or a 0. These will then be tallied up for an overall score, or pulse of the current top thirty country songs, with the highest possible score being a +30 and the lowest possible score being a -30. The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the current state of mainstream country music and determine if it’s improving or getting worse. To see the full list of the top 30 country airplay songs for this week, click here. Let’s take a look at this week’s top thirty.

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: +1

POSITIVE! For the first time ever in the series of The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music on Country Perspective, we have a positive score. It’s up from -3 last week. As you can see there was a ton of movement on the charts. The biggest gainers on the chart and newest additions are Zac Brown Band’s “Homegrown,” which debuts at #23, and A Thousand Horses’ “Smoke,” which went from #48 last week to #26 this week (a whopping gain of 22 spots). These songs replace the biggest losers on the chart: Parmalee’s “Close Your Eyes,” which fell from #8 to out of the top 30 and RaeLynn’s “God Made Girls,” which fell from #18 to out of the top 30. Man is it great to see that latter song fall out. There’s also a new #1 on the chart, Kenny Chesney’s “Til It’s Gone.” Mainstream country music appears to be changing for the better. Let’s hope this trend continues.

Also, the fact that Luke, FGL, Jason, and Cole all rose while Tim and Brad dropped rather significantly is a little worrisome. A positive number overall out of 30 songs is great. But a top five or top ten with that crap is still defining of country radio.

Yes we still have to deal with the bro country holdovers, who will fight tooth and nail to keep it alive. And of course Sam Hunt is another problem. I wouldn’t worry about Tim dropping because Shotgun Rider had a pretty good run and they’re no longer pushing it since he is releasing a new single. I think Brad is releasing a new single too.

Hi love your site I agree on all except kiss you tonight but that’s a dead horse. Looking at songs outside the top 30 but in the Top 40 is interesting.
Joe Nichols Hard To Be Cool would be a -1.
Gloriana Trouble either a +1 or a 0 you have to admit it is pretty good
Josh Turner Lay Low +1 We can all agree there
Canaan Smith Love You Like -1 I feel it would be
The band Perry gentle on my mind if it can ever get in the top 30 +1 it is sweet
Kelsea Ballerini love me like you mean it I’m iffy about is give it a 0
Realistically the only other realistic ones are little red wagon -1 and girl crush would be a positive to me and those are it for realistic entrances
Just my thoughts Love the blog

Hey a positive! The fog is starting to clear….. I’d still give Randy a 0 but that’s just my opinion. And yeah there will always guys like FGL, Aldean, and Bryan who will continue to beat the crap out of the dead bro-country horse but I have hope that in 2015 the quality will outweigh the money (hey Luke Bryan’s announcement of his last spring break album and acknowledgment that he is getting too old has to mean something right?) And btw Josh, Brad does have a new song coming called “Crushin’ It”
