The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music [Feb. 14]

Each week I take a look the Billboard Country Airplay chart and grade the top 30 songs. The grading format I use each week is every song will receive either a +1, -1 or a 0. These will then be tallied up for an overall score, or pulse of the current top thirty country songs, with the highest possible score being a +30 and the lowest possible score being a -30. How do I determine if a song is rated a +1, -1 or 0? The rating it received on the site by either Derek or myself will determine this. If it hasn’t been rated yet, then I will make the call. Songs rated between 7 and 10 receive a +1. Songs rated between 5 and 6.5 receive a 0. Songs rated 4.5 or lower receive a -1.

The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the current state of mainstream country music and determine if it’s improving or getting worse. To see the full list of the top 30 country airplay songs for this week, click here. Let’s take a look at this week’s top thirty.

RaeLynn’s “God Made Girls” fell from #16 to out of the top 30.

Kelsea Ballerini’s “Love Me Like You Mean It” fell from #30 to out of the top 30.

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -3

The pulse slightly improves to -3 this week after being at -4 last week. What brought about this change was RaeLynn’s “God Made Girls” falling back out of the top 30 and this time it should be for good. Kelsea Ballerini only spent one week in the top 30 before falling out. The two new songs are improvements and that’s only because they’re replacing such terrible songs. The first is Keith Urban and Erich Church’s “Raise ‘Em Up,” which isn’t surprising at all. If they win a Grammy for it this Sunday it will boost it even more. Either way I see this song reaching the top ten easily. The other new song is Joe Nichols’ newest single “Hard To Be Cool.” I was hoping Joe’s return to the The Pulse would be with a better song, but sadly it’s just another terrible, checklist song. I miss the old Joe Nichols who made good music.

Luke Bryan’s “I See You” is the new #1 on the charts. I called this last week. Bryan shouldn’t have too long of a stay at the top because Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett and Randy Houser are all rising quickly behind him. Houser would be the only upgrade. The biggest gainers are “Raise ‘Em Up,” which moved up 12 spots, “Homegrown” moved up four spots and several songs moved up two spots. The biggest losers are “God Made Girls” which fell out of the top 30 completely, “Til It’s Gone” fell eight spots and “Something in the Water” dropped down five spots. So yes Carrie will not reach #1 on the Airplay chart, just as everyone suspected. Her camp is already pushing “Little Toy Guns,” so “Something in the Water” will be out of the top 30 within a couple of weeks. What a shame.

Be sure to weigh in on this week’s chart in the comments below!

All righty a new Top 60. Here we go this time with explanation.
    1. I See You -1. His delivery in this is poor. It’s way to uneven for me to enjoy.
    2. Talladega +1. Definite good song shame it’s only got one week. I’m curious what Eric will do next.
3 Sun Daze -1. I hate this song and wanna destroy it with a sledgehammer. It should peak at number 2.
    4. Make Me Wanna -1. Just way too forgetful to justify neutral.
    5. Like A Cowboy +1. One of his best vocal performances ever a definite bright spot.
    6. Lonely Tonight +1. I refuse to acknowledge Blake Shelton. Ashley steals this song to make it really good.
    7. Just Getting Started -1. Screw this song
    8. Something In The Water +1 third best song on the chart.
    9. Mean To Me +1. Love the voice and arrangement the lyrics are a little bland.

Raymond- Church’s new single is supposedly “Like A Wrecking Ball”. I really hate that song so sorry Eric. Anyway the possibility of SunDaze peaking at #2 is music to my ears. I wish it would have peaked WAY lower and because radio realized It was a terrible song instead of just peaking because of a bad luck of the draw with the charts, but hey every song of theirs that doesn’t go #1 is a small step forward to me.Unfortunately Something In The Water and Talladega (two +1’s) will be gone next week. Maybe Lay Low can replace one of them? I hope….

    Anyway here’s my rankings
    1. I See You: -1
    2. Talladega: +1
    3. Sundaze: -1
    4. Make Me Wanna: -1
