The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music [January 11]

Each week I take a look the Billboard Country Airplay chart and grade the top 30 songs. The grading format I use each week is every song will receive either a +1, -1 or a 0. These will then be tallied up for an overall score, or pulse of the current top thirty country songs, with the highest possible score being a +30 and the lowest possible score being a -30. How do I determine if a song is rated a +1, -1 or 0? The rating it received on the site or myself will determine this. If it hasn’t been rated yet, then I will make the call. Songs rated between 7 and 10 receive a +1. Songs rated a 5 or 6 receive a 0. Songs rated 4 or lower receive a -1.

The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the current state of mainstream country music and determine if it’s improving or getting worse. Let’s take a look at this week’s top thirty…

  1. Thomas Rhett – “Die A Happy Man” -1
  2. Jason Aldean – “Gonna Know We Were Here” -1

First four week number one since ‘Play It Again’ by Luke Bryan over a year and a half ago. Whatever one thinks about ‘Die A Happy Man’ it is undeniably an across the board hit.

I am personally looking forward to the next couple of weeks. Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, A Thousand Horses will leave this week than Jana Kramer and Jason Aldean will be gone the following week. So we should see the score go up a little bit

I got the Boy is one of only 3 +1s in the top 30 so I don’t think that will help the chart unless something good replaces it

*cough* Maddie & Tae Frankie Ballard or Jon Pardi. Not only that but we will have Tim McGraw release “Humble and Kind” Reba with “Just Like Them Horses” and Dierks Bentley and Martina McBride will have a new song out.

‘I Got The Boy’ is gaining strong spins, I don’t see it going recurrent yet. On the other hand that pile of garbage called Jason Aldean, even tough radio tried to push him “artificially” to make him hit #1 for the last 4 weeks, seems to be headed to recurrent.

Wow. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a pulse this low.

    30: Better In Boots- -1
It’s boring. I can’t remember it. It’s so generic, so flat, so lifeless that it honestly feels like white noise to me whenever I hear it. Tyler Farr’s vocals don’t help, as most of the time he sounds like he needs a glass of water. It works for certain songs, but certainly not here.
