The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music [January 19]

Each week I take a look the Billboard Country Airplay chart and grade the top 30 songs. The grading format I use each week is every song will receive either a +1, -1 or a 0. These will then be tallied up for an overall score, or pulse of the current top thirty country songs, with the highest possible score being a +30 and the lowest possible score being a -30. How do I determine if a song is rated a +1, -1 or 0? The rating it received on the site or myself will determine this. If it hasn’t been rated yet, then I will make the call. Songs rated between 7 and 10 receive a +1. Songs rated a 5 or 6 receive a 0. Songs rated 4 or lower receive a -1.

The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the current state of mainstream country music and determine if it’s improving or getting worse. Let’s take a look at this week’s top thirty…

I’m surprised by a lot this week. Maddie & Tae as best song while I certainly agree I was still banking on Chris Stapleton being the best song. Also what makes you think Kelsea Ballerini is on the hot seat she just entered the Top 10 and with LoCash, Jason, and Jana Kramer all falling now Kelsea will get some conversions. Hopefully Dibs can hurry up get to the top and get out. Rumor is Kelsea wants to have “Peter Pan” as the new song and I’m curious what people think of that song.

I think Peter Pan is one of the better songs on her album.

damn how i hate country radio. That fix garbage has already sicken me.
I agree on Shut Up and Fish being the best song. Sadly I Got the Boy has officially peaked and it will be gone soon.
I have found myself listening to Stay a Little Longer and I changed my mind on it: i think it deserves a +1, that guitar work at the end is stellar and the melody is catchy.
Break on Me is another song I’d rate higher, I’d give it a 0 (expecially since Confession, which has terrible production and lyrics that try to be deep but fell short: at least Break on Me has a more bearable production and way better lyrics).
how is that Jason Aldean clown still on the chart?
Also, I know it might sound strange but I had never heard Better In Boots until today. WTF is that pile of garbage? Can’t Tyler Farr go find some lonely road to satisfy his desperate need of driving drunk and eventually bang his head against the moon instead of trying to pass himself for a serious country singer??
