The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music [Dec. 13]

Every week I take a look at the current top ten country songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and give each song either a +1, a -1 or a 0. These will then be tallied up for an overall score, or pulse of the current top ten country songs, with the highest possible score being a +10 and the lowest possible score being a -10. The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the current state of mainstream country music and determine if it’s improving or getting worse. 1. Tim McGraw – “Shotgun Rider” +1
  2. Carrie Underwood – “Something In The Water” +1
  3. Keith Urban – “Somewhere In My Car” -1
  4. Maddie & Tae – “Girl In A Country Song” +1
  5. Sam Hunt – “Leave The Night On” -1
  6. Brad Paisley – “Perfect Storm” +1
  7. Little Big Town – “Day Drinking” -1
  8. Florida Georgia Line – “Sun Daze” -1
  9. Eric Church – “Talladega” -1
  10. Jason Aldean – “Burnin’ It Down” -1

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -2

The pulse drops from -1 to -2. The culprit? The return of Florida Georgia Line to the top ten. And with what I consider their worst song ever in “Sun Daze.” Everything about this song is terrible, especially the lyrics. Eric Church also makes it into the top ten this week with one of the weaker songs from his album, “Talladega.” As a result Frankie Ballard and Blake Shelton fall out of the top ten. I thought we would get a positive pulse by the end of the year, but I don’t think we are going to see it now. Maybe in 2015 if we are lucky.

  8. Blake Shelton – “Neon Light” 0
  9. Frankie Ballard – “Sunshine & Whiskey” -1
  10. Jason Aldean – “Burnin’ It Down” -1

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -1

The pulse once again remains at -1. The top ten however has finally changed after three straight weeks of the same songs. Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt” fell out as expected and is replaced by Brad Paisley’s “Perfect Storm.” This was a song after further thinking that I realized I was too tough on in my original review of it. And I’ll take Paisley over Florida Georgia Line any day, even the newer Paisley music. With it being Black Friday and Christmas shopping season, the top ten rankings should continue to fluctuate through the rest of 2014.

  9. Jason Aldean – “Burnin’ It Down” -1
  10. Florida Georgia Line – “Dirt” +1

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -1

The pulse remains the same once again. For the third straight week the same songs remained in the top ten and just a bunch of shuffling occurred. Carrie Underwood remains at #1 and Jason Aldean’s “Burnin’ It Down” fell seven spots in the chart to #9. Both pieces of news bring a smile to my face. More good news: Florida Georgia Line is almost out of the top ten. There are several songs rising fast from 11-20, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we finally get some new songs in the top ten.

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -1

The pulse remains the same at -1 this week. In fact the entire top ten remains the same, except a lot of shuffling took place. The two biggest changes both bring a smile to my face. Sam Hunt only lasted one week at #1 and falls to #3. The new #1 is Carrie Underwood’s “Something In The Water,” aided by the release of her greatest hits album. It’s great to not only see a good song sitting at the top again, but a female country artist too. The other big change was Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt” falling five spots to #9 in the chart. Next week it could fall out completely. I’m sure their camp is pushing “Sun Daze” hard to replace it soon as it’s slowly creeping up the charts. For now enjoy an almost positive top ten country chart.

The Current Pulse of Mainstream Country Music: -1

The pulse improves to -1 from -2 last week. Could the pulse actually move into positive territory?! Just based on the ear test I can tell mainstream country has been improving a little lately. There were actually no bro country songs performed on the CMA Awards. This is all despite the fact that traditional country fans’ worst nightmare has come true: Sam Hunt is #1 on the country chart. No!!! I still have yet to hear a good argument as to why people listen to Sam Hunt music. There’s nothing creative nor country about it. Anyway the reason the pulse improved this week is because Luke Bryan dropped out of the top ten with his bland pop country and was replaced with Tim McGraw’s “Shotgun Rider.” Could McGraw be coming back to the good side? Well his new album was certainly one of the best in mainstream country this year and it’s good to be enjoying his music again. Let’s hope the pulse continues to improve.
